Polar Animals

Polar Animals, like the polar bear and beluga whale, have a layer of fat called blubber. Blubber keeps them warm when they swim in icy water. We did a blubber science experiment today using vegetable shortening. We first stuck our hands in ice water with no protection, brrrr! We couldn't keep our hand in there long. We then filled a  zip lock bag with shortening,  we made a fist, and wrapped the bag around our hand. We discovered that we could keep our hand in the water for a long time!
